Xsigo – virtualising the server networking layer

Xsigo produces I/O directors and its mission is to upset the enterprise networking market. The goal is to displace customer’s traditional stacks of network switches with the Xsigo virtualised server fabric. The company asserts that where server and storage layers have been widely virtualised, only vendor proprietary networking virtualisation have been launched; apart, that is, from Xsigo. The positive implications of removing the direct link between physical and logical resources is one we at Rainmaker Files are exploring because of all the benefits customers reap. Networking as a concept obviously dramatically elevated the value of IT by connecting users and IT containers together.

The OVA pushes KVM as the next big virtualisation ecosystem

There is no doubt that VMware and Microsoft have the 2 most important virtualisation environments, based on ESX and Hyper-V server hypervisors respectively. Aside from the Unix and mainframe approaches, Citrix (Xen) and RedHat (KVM) vie for third spot. In May 2011 a number of vendors with an interest in building an ecosystem around KVM formed the Open Virtualization Alliance (OVA).
Despite the endorsement of these large and important virtualisation players, we think it will take a number of years for KVM to establish itself: however we do believe it has the best chance of becoming the third major virtualisation ecosystem within the next 3 years.

Addressing the eDiscovery market opportunity

eDiscovery refers to any process in which digitised data is sought and secured to use as evidence in a civil or criminal legal case. eDiscovery rules require all parties involved in the litigated case to produce electronic information in a timely manner specified by the court. Consequently, IT teams are expected to have access to scalable storage systems that can accommodate large and growing volumes of eDiscovery data. IT teams are also expected to be familiar with tools to help manage and protect said data for a lifetime. During the course of scanning the market for our storage hypervisor study, we came across Pitney Bowes’ eDiscovery services.
